On 4th February, 2020, HE Paul Kagame, the President of the republic of Rwanda inaugurated Rwanda Cancer Center located inside Rwanda Military Hospital, The multimillion cancer center is the first of its kind in the country and in the east African region, with high end technology used to provide radiotherapy. Before this center was built patients had to go abroad for such treatment and only a small portion was able to access such treatment which was very costly.
In his remarks HE the president said this is a landmark in the history of Rwandan health sector and it is a contribution to national development since a big amount of money was being spent on such treatment, money the country does not have in the first place. The inaugurated center is made up of two linear accelerators using Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy and one CT scan for treatment planning purpose. It also has a twenty (20) beds capacity chemotherapy Unit. This is a step towards the establishment of a fully-fledged cancer center. The center started offering treatment from March 2019 and to date, a total number of three hundred seventeen (317) patients have been treated with a daily activity of about fifty (50) patients and this is expected to increase with time to reach full potential as the machines itself have the capacity to treat 200 patients a day.
